Day 1 - Lots of Travel

We departed Greensboro from Westover at 10:30 this morning. David and Mary Harrop, Stephanie Routh, and Rowland and Sherry Brazzeal saw us off. David prayed for us before we loaded up the mini-van and made our way to RDU for our first flight of the day to Atlanta. We had an uneventful flight and are now waiting to board our next flight, which will take us to Lima. We should arrive close to midnight EDT.

The next leg will take us from Lima to Pucallpa. We will not leave the airport in Lima, since our next flight leaves at 04:45 and we have to be at the airport at 03:00. We will hang out either in chairs or on the floor for a few hours. Dave Simmons will meet us in the Lima airport once we have gone through customs and immigration. We should arrive in Pucallpa around 06:00 AM. I believe we will stay in Pucallpa to attend church with Dave and Marilyn before heading to the SAMAIR base to finally get some rest.

Thank you for your prayers. There will not be another post until Sunday in the afternoon or evening.

Grace,
Steve and the Peru Team

Our Prayer Calendar

A SAMAIR plane flies with precious cargo over an Amazon tributary.

April 30 – Praise and thankfulness for all of those who are supporting us to go as a team and represent the body of Christ and Westover, which ultimately is praise to God. Pray for the team to have safe travels and make our flight connections okay. Pray for the unity of the team, whether things go smoothly or not, and for us to exhibit a gracious spirit.

May 1 – Pray for all of our bags to arrive with us and for no issues going through Peruvian Customs. Pray for the team to be able to rest and recover from the roughly 21 hours of travel from point to point. Pray for unity of the team with those we will be serving alongside, including Dave and Marilyn Simmons, the SAMAIR missionaries, and the local Peruvians.

May 2 – Pray for boldness and courage for the team that we will be humble and obedient to the calling of the tasks set before us. Pray for parenting wisdom for Laura Hartness while Jonathan is in Peru. Pray also for wise choices and good behavior for the Hartness children during Jonathan’s absence.

May 3 – Pray for opportunities to minister to whomever God puts before us, whether it be the missionaries or the Peruvians. Pray for the wellness of each team member and for each of us to have an awareness of God’s plan while on this trip. Pray for Shelley Bowman that things will go well for her during Scott’s absence. Pray that the workload at Scott’s job will be handled while he is away.

May 4 – Pray that as we work God will guide our hearts, minds, tongues and hands bringing glory to himself. Pray for Patrick’s father, Jack Rothrock, who has been dealing with health issues that have had him in and out of the hospital recently. Pray that he will continue to improve and will not need to go back to the hospital while Patrick is out of the country.

May 5 – Pray for our host missionaries, Dave and Marilyn Simmons with South America Mission (SAM) http://southamericamission.org/  Pray for their ministries in Peru: Educational Ministries - AOPLV Huanta, Educational Ministries - Johannes Gutenberg, The Anderson Church Multiplication Fund, Peru Field – GO Fund, Peru Church Planting, and Heartbeats of Hope. Pray for SAMAIR Peru as they reach out to 55+ tribes scattered throughout the jungles of Peru.

May 6 – Pray for the relationships we build as we serve alongside the missionaries and the nationals. Pray for Mike Reese’s daughter Abby in her relocation from Charlotte to Wilmington and all that goes with being in a new city. Pray for Mike’s business partner’s wife, Melinda. She had brain surgery six months ago that had complications which have left her with debilitating headaches. This has caused a huge strain on the entire family. Pray for healing, mercy and grace for the family.

May 7 – Praise for all that was accomplished throughout the week. For those of us who are task oriented by nature, praise that we put a greater value on relationships and not just tasks. Pray for Steve that his office will not experience any major issues while he is away. Praise for getting to see another culture for a short time and realize that we worship the same God.

May 8 – Pray for safety in our travels home, for on time connections, for some sleep as we fly, and for an awareness of the sacrifices that so many make to go to the least of these, God’s creation around the world. Amen.

The 2016 Peru Team

The Fearless Five are (from L to R)
Mike Reese, Steve Miller, Jonathan Hartness, Scott Bowman, Patrick Rothrock

The team will work alongside our missionaries, David and Marilyn Simmons, by
helping to finish a flight staging area at the hangar in Pucallpa. The flight staging area is where SAMAIR receives passengers for flights, weighs them and their cargo, checks documents, etc. As the hangar has grown the old staging area became inadequate, so the team is there for construction purposes.  They will help wire outlets, lights, ceiling fans, etc., as well as install a bathroom with sink, shower, and toilet. They will also do tile work, and install a septic tank. The team may also work on other miscellaneous projects around the hangar, as well as within the interior of the staging area.
